Written by: BeckWhile there certainly is no clear front-runner in America's pending election, elections across Europe already hint at an ominous shift to the left in world-wide politics. It's too soon to say, but by this Monday, we should have a fairly clear picture of what politics in Europe will look like for at least a year. Elections are going on continent-wide over a variety of issues. The left, knowing that the majority of Europeans oppose the Iraqi war, have used the war for leverage even in nations where it's scarcely a valid or relevant political point. They've hit pay dirt. Take the example of the Netherlands, which has only provided 1,400 troops to the Coalition: In the Netherlands, unofficial results with most of the EU parliament vote counted showed strong gains for leftist opposition parties and losses for the conservative parties in the Dutch coalition government. These elections are for the EU parliament, not for the Dutch government, yet left wing political parties have made strong gains. The question, then, is whether this is a one-time aberration, or this is a sea-change with far reaching implications. We'll no better Monday when all the votes are counted; nonetheless, this early article from the AP disturbs me. I ask whether the right is wearing blinders because, at least in America, we're often guilty of blithely assuming that we can't possibly lose, because we're convinced of the rightness of our actions. We also blithely count on the loyalty of Europeans that we've been allied with for so many decades--centuries in some cases. But what do we do when the left dominatingly sweeps Europe, they pull their troops out of Iraq completely, insurgencies mount in Iraq as the sharks scent the blood in the water, and China decides it's prime time to make their move on Taiwan?
