Conservative pundit and columnist Michelle Malkin is the latest from the mainstream press to
add blogging to her other writing responsibilities. Frankly, the chance to pontificate obnoxiously to a public forum is tempting enough for people like myself, so I have to imagine the temptation goes double for someone already published in the media.
I've been reading her early efforts, and I must say that so far I really like what I've seen. Take this
recent submission from her wherein she argues that America could benefit from emulating Ireland's example of eliminating automatic citizenship for anyone born on the nation's soil.
During my book tour across the country for Invasion, this issue came up time and again. In the Southwest, everyone has a story of heavily pregnant women crossing the Mexican border to deliver their "anchor babies." At East Coast hospitals, tales of South Korean "obstetric tourists" abound. (An estimated 5,000 South Korean anchor babies are born in the US every year). And, of course, there's a terrorism angle. [ed: finally, SOMEONE understands this]
The time is ripe to reassess drive-by citizenship and what it means to be an American. Alas, given the huge chasm between elites and public opinion on immigration, while it's safe to say that such a referendum would pass just as overwhelmingly here in America, it will never come to a vote in the first place.
OK, so maybe cut & pasting two-thirds of her post doesn't exactly constitute fair-use, but hopefully the glowing review will motivate her to forgive me.
