Written by: BeckThe next big disaster in Africa has rapidly begun developing in the Ivory Coast. While it's too soon to tell how things will turn out, I already suspect this will be a case of things progressively growing worse over the coming months. Briefly, here's how the situation has evolved: in 1999, fighting between Ivory Coast government troops and rebel forces from northern regions of the nation broke out. France brokered a cease fire between the two factions in the escalating conflict in 2003, but that began breaking down in the past few months. Representatives of rebel groups (who draw much of their strength from neighboring nations Niger, Burkina Faso, and Liberia) withdrew from a power-sharing arrangement with the current government, which prompted the government to resume attacks on the northern territories. In the course of one of these attacks, Ivory Coast airforce units bombed--one presumes accidentally, but then you never know--9 French peace keepers and an American aid worker. France retaliated by destroying the entire Ivory Coast air force (something like 3 plains and a couple helicopters evidently). Suffice it to say, Ivory Coast citizens are unhappy with France. They blame France for pressuring the government into entering the original cease fire arrangement, and blame France for recent developments as well. Not to mention being unhappy about France blowing up their entire air force. French citizens (and anyone white for that matter) are being murdered, their houses pillaged, and their lives threatened. Since the loss of their airforce, and under pressure from France and the UN, the Ivory Coast government once again is willing to enter a cease fire. Still, things are very bad for the region. The Ivory Coast has been the strongest economy in West Africa, and this economy serves as a driving force behind neighboring countries' economies. The situation bears close watching. Perhaps everything will turn out for the best. But then, as a friend of mine is fond of saying, perhaps monkeys will fly out of my ass. For more coverage, see MSM articles here and here, and Vince Aut Morire has a suitably anti-French and -UN blog post on the whole affair. Also be sure to read Goemagog's thoughts on the subject from earlier this week.
