Written by: BeckAt least I assume that's what's going on--how else to explain the United Nations' continued ineptitude, pusilanimity, and impotence in dealing with Sudan? In July, amidst growing signs of genocidal atrocities being committed in the Darfur region of Sudan, the UN Passed a Resolution (I know, Earth shaking isn't it?) resolving that there might be trouble if the Sudan didn't stop slaughtering its citizens. In September, another resolution was passed, this time threatening sanctions! Then came early October, at which point a proud Kofi Annan was able to confidently declare that there had been no progress in the Sudan. It's now November. I bet the residents of the Darfur region are sure glad the UN is looking out for them. Were it not for the UN, after all, their lives wouldn't be... being discussed in, um, negotiations to arrange provisions to ensure their security. Yeah, it's still pretty ugly in Sudan. In New York, a U.N. draft resolution on Friday urged warring parties to make peace, promising international support and possible debt forgiveness in return.I guess the UN figures that if threats don't work, maybe bribes will. 70,000 people are estimated to have died since March. Let's have a big round of applause for UN effectiveness! And finally, because I know you all want it: a UN official with a profound command of the obvious: In southern Darfur, several thousand people who were forced out of a camp in the middle of the night returned to find the site destroyed and its generators and water pump looted, U.N. officials said Friday. How much would you like to bet that the situation would change dramatically and rapidly for the better if Bush were to go on TV and say, "Once again, the UN has failed miserably in the relatively straight forward task for which it was supposedly created. Alright, fine, guess I'll have to take matters into my own hands. So anyway, if the systematic government sponsored killing of civilians in Darfur by the Sudanese government does not stop in the next 24 hours, then in the next 72 hours every single member of the Sudanese government will either be dead, in captivity, or hiding in a spider hole somewhere in the outskirts of Khartoum. Thank you for your time, and God Bless America."
