Feeling a bit Drafty in here.
Yet another call for re-instatement of the
draft, something I support. This one comes with some different facets though, such as the "Starship Troopers" barring of non-"veterans" from some aspects of society, like college. I like that bit, and wouldn't mind seeing a similar ban on government employment.
I don't like giving people alternative choices though. Compulsary social work would be flooded with so many people that they'd have to restrict who could and couldn't participate, meaning that those with connections would sit in day-care centers reading Seuss while those without connections were sent off to more dangerous tasks. Compulsary social work has been a recurring idea of leftists who seem oblivious of what it means. A large part of government taxation is to provide social services. If we have to provide those services ourselves, what the hell are we being taxed so much for?
I don't think the real goal of compulsary social work is about helping people. I think it's about forcing hundreds of thousands of people to be the 'friendly' face of an uncaring government, a Big Brother tailored to your socio-economic status.
I'm in favor of drafting into the National Guard. With the extra manpower, a greater variety of units could be established, giving both the states and federal governments more flexibility in responding to military emergencies and natural disasters, while keeping regular payrolls and benefits to a minimum. But while everyone seems to agree that we don't have enough soldiers and can't agree on what to do about it, does it really make sense to be
reducing the facilities we have to train and support our military?
If we do start conscription again, where will the draftees sleep? Your couch?
Goe, wonders what those people are thinking.
