It's sort of old news by now, but I've been hammering so much on the elections going on in Ukraine that I wanted to go ahead and post the latest news.
Ukraine's Supreme Court has ruled the previous election null & void, and
has ordered a redo. This is a big win for the opposition party. The incumbent party was hoping to force a brand new election--i.e. with new candidates. This would have given the incumbent party the chance to pick a stronger potential leader & have robbed the opposition of their strongest candidate.
Now, however, the same two opponents will be going head-to-head again. This time, the elections will be much more closely monitored, the Election Commission will be restructured to insure fairness, and the opposition is almost certainly assured of an electoral victory. The new elections will be held the day after Christmas.
Especially significant is the blow to the prestige not only of the ruling oligarchs in Ukraine, but also to Russian President Putin who has invested a lot of political capital in backing the establishment candidate Yanukovych. One thing's for certain: when the new election goes forward, the world will be watching.
